CHAPTER ONE

1.0    INTRODUCTION

A hotel is an “Establishment held out by the proprietor as offering food, drink and if so required, sleeping accommodation, without any special contract to travelers who appears able and willing to pay a reasonable sum of money for the services and facilities provided and who is in a fit state to be received”. Hotel is a place where all who conduct themselves properly, and ready to pay for there entertainment are received, if there be any accommodation for them to be engage in as to the duration of their stay.

The term ‘Hotel’ was used in England in about 1760. Hotel or inn is defined by British law as a place where bonafide travelers can receive food and shelter, provided he is in a position to pay for the services and he or she is in a fit condition to be received. An Hotel or inn may also be defined as an establishment whose primary business is providing lodging facilities for the general public and which furnishes one or more of the following services (a) Food and Beverage service (b) Room service(c) Laundry service and (d) Hall service etc

Hotel Keeping or Management can be traced back to many centuries and its evolution through the ages has been brought about by Britain’s economical and industrial changes and developments during the seventh and eight centuries, it was the monasteries that supplied hospitality to strangers and, as no charge was made for the accommodation; all travelers were expected to contribute. As more people began to travel, they group themselves together, not only for the company, but for mutual protection from highway men and robbers. Consequently, travelers arrived in groups at a monastery and it was often difficult to accommodate them all. Hotel proprietors were legally referred to as ‘Common Innkeepers’.

Therefore, Hotel Management is the maintenance of hotel and also the over see of all services provided by the hotel and day to day activities. Hotel management system is a computerized system that will take the manual operation of a hotel into consideration in other to surpass and solve all odds and problems of the existing system of operation.

1.1      STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

            The hotel management industry is with major problem of keeping guest records, immediate knowing of vacant rooms and allocation of rooms. They further faced with the difficulty of data entry and searching, also with the large storage space of physical files that occupies too much space. Due to existing system method, Staff information were not kept for future use such as staff full names, phone number(s), Address, Passport, Salary, Position, Next of Kin etc.
